In the summer
months, Cottonwood

always passable.
Whether coming from
Denver or Colorado
Springs, when you
reach Johnson
Village, turn
right/north towards
Buena Vista on
Highway 24. Take a
left at the main
traffic light toward
Cottonwood Pass. The
road will be paved
all the way to the
top and then unpaved
on the other side.
This road is well
maintained but
narrow with many
hairpin turns. There
will be sections of
washboard conditions
and often potholes
to avoid. Follow all
the way until it
ends at Taylor
Reservoir. Turn left
toward Gunnison and
follow the road
around the reservoir
and eventually into
Taylor Canyon. This
is County Rd. 742
